Praise for Playing for Keeps in Stocks & Futures

"Wise traders seeking to improve their trading knowledge and skills are well advised to learn from the accumulated experience and knowledge of those who have already paid their dues, such as Tom Bierovic. Bierovic is an accomplished trader and an excellent teacher, and he provides indispensable and valuable information in his new book, which every serious trader should acquire and study. I heartily recommend it."
–Edward D. Dobson, President, Traders Press, Inc.

"In Tom’s extraordinary no-nonsense way, he has presented so much more value than almost any reader will ever appreciate. Not only has he provided three solid approaches, he includes an insight into the strategic thinking found in many of the best traders!"
–Glen Ring, President, Glen Ring Enterprises
Analyst and publisher of View on Futures newsletter and Daily Update

"For traders wondering what to do with all those technical indicators that are part of their charting software packages, Tom Bierovic offers three trading systems that use combinations of their inputs to generate specific buy and sell signals. Moreover, Bierovic offers enough variations and trading concepts so that enterprising readers should have no trouble devising their own trading systems based on this compact, but idea-filled, text."
–Jack Schwager, Author of Market Wizards and The New Market Wizards

"A carefully crafted book and well thought-out selection of some of the best techniques. The analytical tools are that much more valuable because the author has employed them in his own trading program and refined them to reflect a good technical analysis foundation on which to build and succeed."
–Timothy Slater, Former Managing Director of Dow Jones Seminars, Computrac Technical Analysis Software Corporation

Ignorable - Dimitri Shvorob - London, UK
Yellowed paper, charts from the 1980s, reference to a top-of-the-line workstation with a 330 MB hard drive.. The book came out in 1993. It offers fixed-income and derivatives-lite math and market details available in any other book with 'fixed income' in its title, and has, I think, about 20 pages of more original content, including a 5-page discussion of common FI strategies. Is that worth ? You decide.

Great book, a little expensive - Campegius Bronkhorst - Tucson, AZ USA
I thought this book was a great read. It is well written, logical, and methodical. It is a great book for an advanced beginner, or an intermediate trader (like me) who is reading a wide variety of trading books. I liked the messages from the book: think, define problems, find solutions, test, test, and test. I learned some new things that I have not read anywhere else, but the book also goes over subjects already well covered in other books. The book specifies that it targets the futures market, but most material in the book applies to the stock market (which I participate in) as well.

This is a fine book to read, especially if you can buy it used (it is well made with an excellent binding) or find it in a library or at a friend's house. Which brings me to the price: it's a bit steep, the book is not that long, which is why I gave it four stars.

The SABR/LIBOR Market Model: Pricing, Calibration and Hedging for Complex Interest-Rate Derivatives

The SABR/LIBOR Market Model: Pricing, Calibration and Hedging for Complex Interest-Rate Derivatives

gotoshop

Product Details

This book presents a major innovation in the interest rate space. It explains a financially motivated extension of the LIBOR Market model which accurately reproduces the prices for plain vanilla hedging instruments (swaptions and caplets) of all strikes and maturities produced by the SABR model. The authors show how to accurately recover the whole of the SABR smile surface using their extension of the LIBOR market model. This is not just a new model, this is a new way of option pricing that takes into account the need to calibrate as accurately as possible to the plain vanilla reference hedging instruments and the need to obtain prices and hedges in reasonable time whilst reproducing a realistic future evolution of the smile surface. It removes the hard choice between accuracy and time because the framework that the authors provide reproduces today's market prices of plain vanilla options almost exactly and simultaneously gives a reasonable future evolution for the smile surface.

The authors take the SABR model as the starting point for their extension of the LMM because it is a good model for European options. The problem, however with SABR is that it treats each European option in isolation and the processes for the various underlyings (forward and swap rates) do not talk to each other so it isn't obvious how to relate these processes into the dynamics of the whole yield curve. With this new model, the authors bring the dynamics of the various forward rates and stochastic volatilities under a single umbrella. To ensure the absence of arbitrage they derive drift adjustments to be applied to both the forward rates and their volatilities. When this is completed, complex derivatives that depend on the joint realisation of all relevant forward rates can now be priced.

Inefficient Markets: An Introduction to Behavioral Finance (Clarendon Lectures in Economics)

Inefficient Markets: An Introduction to Behavioral Finance (Clarendon Lectures in Economics)

gotoshop

Product Details

The efficient markets hypothesis has been the central proposition in finance for nearly thirty years. It states that securities prices in financial markets must equal fundamental values, either because all investors are rational or because arbitrage eliminates pricing anomalies. This book describes an alternative approach to the study of financial markets: behavioral finance. This approach starts with an observation that the assumptions of investor rationality and perfect arbitrage are overwhelmingly contradicted by both psychological and institutional evidence. In actual financial markets, less than fully rational investors trade against arbitrageurs whose resources are limited by risk aversion, short horizons, and agency problems. The book presents models of such markets. These models explain the available financial data more accurately than the efficient markets hypothesis, and generate new predictions about security prices. By summarizing and expanding the research in behavioral finance, the book builds a new theoretical and empirical foundation for the economic analysis of real-world markets.

Customer Reviews ::

Best introductory book on behavioral finance - Robert Stephenson-padron - Pamplona, Spain
As has been admitted by even the staunchest former proponents of financial economics (such as Burton Malkiel), the multi-decades old dominant intellectual field in academic finance has piled up against itself persistent anomalous data. Thus, it is no surprise, as the science of economics advanced, that a new intellectual field would develop to challenge and replace the old. Behavioral finance, which relaxes some of the key assumptions in financial economics, utilizes survey data, and integrates knowledge from psychology to better understand financial markets, is that new intellectual field.

Although still controversial, young economists and financial professionals should become versed in this new field as early as possible: 1) because there is huge room for new research where creative economists can flex their muscle and 2) financial professionals that drop the old adherence to financial economics will have an edge over those that don't. Andrei Shleifer's work is the best introductory work on behavioral finance that I've come across, and I thus strongly recommend it to those who want a quick and easy to understand introduction to this field which is the wave of the future of academic finance (well, I hope).

Trend Trading: A Seven-step Approach to Success (Guppy Trading)

gotoshop

Product Details

If you have no time to follow the market closely, then Trend Trading is the book for you. Trend trading is one of the most effective and easy-to-use methods for making money in the market. Success depends on identifying the trend with confidence and catching the trend after it has started, and on getting out as soon as possible after the uptrend turns into a downtrend.

The book examines in detail the steps in finding, assessing, selecting, managing and monitoring a long-term trend trade. These are proven, successful methods which are easy to understand and apply. Included are the most recent updates and developments in using the count back line and the Guppy Multiple Moving Average. Daryl Guppy also includes a practical look at setting stop loss conditions to protect capital and profits, and a bonus section on Darvas-style trend trading which is the first significant update of this technique in forty years.

Trend Trading shows readers how to use and apply the analysis tools to find effective long-term trades. These can be applied to any group of selected stocks, whether chosen on fundamental criteria, from stock tip newsletters, or found using database technical scans. From this starting point, Guppy shows how the better trades are identified, how risk is managed, and how the trades are closed successfully. The book includes examples of Daryl's personal trades.

Beyond Expectations - Hayden Lee-Hing - Miami, Fl United States
I bought this book with the hope of learning more about trend trading and to understand more about the Guppy Moving Averages technique in particular. I was wonderfully surprised to learn more about my and other traders/investor's behaviour in the market. This book is as psychologically sound as it is technically and practically sound!.
I felt as though an old wise guru was holding my hand and explaining how to be a success at trading whilst pointing out the 'pitfalls' in my and the marketplace's thinking, in general.

A must read for every newbie to trading, both in stocks and Forex.

Love this book or stop trading - DJ - Columbus, OH USA
Too many people want to offer opinions about what they THINK is the trading and its tenants rather than coming to understand its components and how they create a the whole. Market Analysis [fundamental and technical], Behavioral Finance and Personal Psychology, Technology, and Liquidity are all apart of the equation of what makes a true professional successful. This book does not intend to teach you how to analyze a security -- there are plenty of scribes in the market place that do this; rather, it focuses on orders and order execution as they affect your trading. This is invaluable because it essentially gives you the foundation upon which you can become much more accurate at "reading the tape" because you know market tendancies. If you had an opportunity to know a sepcific order type gives you a greater chance of exiting a loosing position or capitalizing price action that is providing a discounted entry point, wouldn't you jump at it? That's where this book shines -- the actual mechanics of order entry and exiting [without basis toward certain markets or analysis {even setting profit targets}] ... you know... "trading"??? Knowing the difference between analysis, strategy development, and actual trading/trade execution makes you complete.

Kenyesian mumbo-jumbo mispresented as "economics" - M. Haber - Minneapolis, MN United States
The author, Dominick Salvatore, is clearly an expert in the field. Unfortunately, his field appears to be Keynesian economics circa the 1960s, and is almost completely wrong, and at times, incoherently wrong. Imagine that in the 1940s to the 1970s, man's knowledge of chemistry was thrown out the window, and replaced with alchemy. This is what Keynesianism did to economics. I have only read the second half of the book, but it simply makes no sense. It rambles on and on about balance of payment "deficits," which are impossible, as the capital account and current account always will balance each other out. It is obsessed with "equilbria" and "disequilibria," based on a mythical "balance of payments" deficit and surplus, rendering such diversions meaningless. The text dumbly assumes that trade between a person across the street from you is completely different from a person across the world from you, and senselessly assumes that government intervention in the economy can achieve policy objective, contrary that the entire historical record indicates this is not the case. Reading this text, one feels like they are in a particularly blighted region of the 19th century, or in Soviet Russia. There is incredibly little of accurate knowledge in this horrifically bad text. Knowing what's in it might be good for passing an exam, but it doesn't teach anything useful beyond that, and unfortunately, it's over reliance on graphs, with mind numbing references to said graphs splattered across multiple pages, makes it very difficult to pull anything together. In summary, Salvatore is an expert in a discredited field, and I am sure if he put in the time and thought, the 10th or 11th edition could actually begin to approach a modern understanding of economics, instead of the dark ages of economics, and thereby become a useful education tool, as opposed to one of indoctrination of failed principles and concepts.

Introduction to Credit Risk Modeling, Second Edition (Chapman & Hall/CRC Financial Mathematics Series)

gotoshop

Product Details

Contains Nearly 100 Pages of New Material

The recent financial crisis has shown that credit risk in particular and finance in general remain important fields for the application of mathematical concepts to real-life situations. While continuing to focus on common mathematical approaches to model credit portfolios, Introduction to Credit Risk Modeling, Second Edition presents updates on model developments that have occurred since the publication of the best-selling first edition.

New to the Second Edition

  • An expanded section on techniques for the generation of loss distributions
  • Introductory sections on new topics, such as spectral risk measures, an axiomatic approach to capital allocation, and nonhomogeneous Markov chains
  • Updated sections on the probability of default, exposure-at-default, loss-given-default, and regulatory capital
  • A new section on multi-period models
  • Recent developments in structured credit

The financial crisis illustrated the importance of effectively communicating model outcomes and ensuring that the variation in results is clearly understood by decision makers. The crisis also showed that more modeling and more analysis are superior to only one model. This accessible, self-contained book recommends using a variety of models to shed light on different aspects of the true nature of a credit risk problem, thereby allowing the problem to be viewed from different angles.

Fundamentals of Corporate Finance Standard Edition

Fundamentals of Corporate Finance Standard Edition

gotoshop

Product Details

The best-selling Fundamentals of Corporate Finance (FCF) is written with one strongly held principle– that corporate finance should be developed and taught in terms of a few integrated, powerful ideas. As such, there are three basic themes that are the central focus of the book: 1) An emphasis on intuition—underlying ideas are discussed in general terms and then by way of examples that illustrate in more concrete terms how a financial manager might proceed in a given situation. 2) A unified valuation approach—net present value (NPV) is treated as the basic concept underlying corporate finance. Every subject covered is firmly rooted in valuation, and care is taken to explain how particular decisions have valuation effects. 3) A managerial focus—the authors emphasize the role of the financial manager as decision maker, and they stress the need for managerial input and judgment. The Eighth Edition continues the tradition of excellence that has earned Fundamentals of Corporate Finance its status as market leader. Every chapter has been updated to provide the most current examples that reflect corporate finance in today’s world. The supplements package has also been updated and improved. From a new computerized test bank that is easier than ever to use, to new narrated PowerPoint for students, to new interactive learning modules, student and instructor support has never been stronger. There is also an optional, exciting new web-based program called "McGraw-Hill’s Homework Manager" that will help your students learn corporate finance by duplicating problems from each chapter in the textbook and by providing automatic grading and feedback to both students and instructors.
